What does Lavender smell like?

Lavender is certainly a name that just about anyone would know. The flowers of this plant are very recognizable and a sight to behold. And an equally stellar reputation is awarded to the well-known scent of lavender.

Here we give you an in-depth look at the olfactory profile of this beautiful bloom.

What is Lavender?

Lavender is an herb plant that is native to Africa and the Mediterranean region. It is a flowering shrub that belongs to the same family as sage and mint. The plant bears beautiful lavender-colored flowers. In fact, the color was named after the hue of the flowers of the plant itself. There are some species that bear blue or violet flowers as well.

The plant has enjoyed a place of eminence across various cultures, starting from the early decades of its discovery as a perfumed plant. Lavender was used in many important events and occasions to diffuse a calming aura all around the place. Commercially, Lavender holds massive value due to its essential oil.

What does it smell like?

The oil has a sweet, flowery tone to it.  Lavender has a presence that is both intoxicating as well as therapeutic. It is a full-bodied oil. The scent is earthy and green, like most herbs, but is also very gentle. It has one of the most relaxing, pleasing scents known to man. The aroma is nothing short of a treat to the senses. It relieves anxiety and is a great help to people who have trouble falling asleep. Interestingly, the scent has been known to have a soothing impact on both humans as well as animals.

Particularly the English lavender variety is very well-known and in popular use across various industries that are in the business of appealing to the olfactory senses. The oil is extracted from the flowers of the plant through the process of distillation.

Lavender is often paired with citrusy or woodsy aromas. Its flowery notes create a beautiful symphony with more refreshing notes. It fuses very well with scents like bergamot, clary sage, lemon, neroli, patchouli, sandalwood, and vetiver.

Where is it used?

Lavender is used extensively in aromatherapy and massage oils. It is also largely used in perfumes and deodorants. Various skin care products like lotions, soaps, creams, and other things are also scented with lavender essential oil. It is a popular choice in air fresheners and ambient scenting. Cleaning products are also infused with lavender oil to dispel any unpleasant odor. Sprays, bath bombs, and candles that feature lavender are a common sight in many places.
