Nursing is a demanding job that commands great respect.
Therefore, all you nurses out there should be comfortable to the max in their daily grind to ensure that they effectively and efficiently deliver their care to their patients.
What nurses need:
A pair of high-quality and comfortable nursing shoes.
And when you're investing in a good pair of shoes, you better know that you're not accidentally going for cheap knock-offs!
But more on the best shoes for nurses later.
Considering the nature of your occupation, your life could depend on a good quality pair of nursing shoes that gives you all-day comfort.
According to the statistics, around 33% of nurses in the US suffer from back and feet pain. Most of these cases can be attributed to wearing inappropriate shoes.
Don't be the 33%!
Before we go to the shoes, here are some features you want to look at when buying shoes for nurses.
1) Weight and Comfort
If you will be wearing shoes almost daily and for long hours, the weight of the shoes is a very crucial consideration. Clunky or heavy shoes can harm your comfort level. This can affect your performance and productivity. On the other hand, if you wear nursing shoes that are not comfortable, your performance will show. Therefore, ensure that your shoes are very comfortable and not create discomfort. If you move around a lot, you will need to buy lightweight shoes.
Aside from buying lightweight and comfortable nursing shoes, you can consider improving your overall comfort by buying compression socks. Such socks help circulation and blood flow to minimize swelling normally observed on those who spend a lot of time on their feet.
2) Support and Stability
Since nurses work long hours, buying a shoe with good support and stability is extremely important. This is vital for both comfort and health reasons. In addition, the shoe you are eyeing should provide excellent back and ankle support during your work routine to eliminate or reduce foot, back and leg pain. Failure to do so might cause you to face leg and back issues in the future.
Factors like design and material, shape and height can greatly impact how the shoe performs. Therefore, consider these factors carefully when buying nursing shoes. You can also experiment with different features to see the ones that fit your feet best. Supportive shoes are both comfortable and healthy.
3) Slip Resistance
Slip resistance is the main factor when it comes to purchasing nursing shoes. Nursing environments are characterized by liquids and spills that can present you with slipping hazards. If you are serving as an ICU nurse, you need to take extra care, and the shoes come in handy for such situations. The shoe selected should offer good grip and slip resistance to ensure that you are always safe throughout the day.
4) Design and Construction
Nursing shoes come in different styles, designs, and construction. Some of the most common shoes in the nursing field include clogs, crocs, athletic shoes, and tennis shoes. Each shoe has its unique benefits and setbacks depending on the work surface, feet type, and medical condition.
If you choose between stylish nursing shoes that are not comfortable but look good and basic-looking shoes that keep your feet healthy and happy, go for the ones that keep your feet healthy. The quality of the material is another key consideration. You don't want to be going to the shop now and then. Leather is one material known for durability.
Design means a lot for comfort in any pair of shoes. People who have flat feet would need well-designed shoes. Flat feet hurt when the soles are not designed thoughtfully. Apart from flat feet, flexible shoe soles go a long way to create comfort for nurses' long walks. Traditional footwear foam may help, but memory foams are a great part of the design.

1. Klogs USA Women’s NAPLES Mule
- cushioned, supportive removable foot bed
The Klogs Women's Naples Mule offers extremely comfortable cushioning and anti-slip outsoles. A golden combination for sure, since you can comfortably work on wet or oily conditions due to the excellent traction. In addition, the removable polyurethane outsole provides supportive comfort. Both insoles and the outsoles are durable, long-lasting and provide extremely good support and comfort. They are great mules for people working in areas characterized by occupational hazards, such as nurses. They are also very good nursing mules for bunions.
They are super soft straight out of the box, requiring a minimal break-in period. They are pretty wide, leaving enough space around the foot for when the feet expand during the day. The cushioning is fantastic. You will never have sore or aching feet again once you start wearing this mule.
They come with a tooled leather design that is beautiful. The design also gives the mule a much more fashionable and attractive look. If you have pain in your heels, this mule will prove beneficial. It allows you to effortlessly make it to the end of your eight-hour (or longer) work schedule.

You didn't seriously think I would leave out Crocs, did you? Look, we all know Crocs receive a lot of flak. But who cares what other people think? The matter is that Crocs are an extremely comfortable nursing clog to wear. If you care more about your day-to-day comfort than you do about what other people think about you, then I'm sure that, by now, you've realized what you need to do. So invest in these Unisex Bistro Clogs because they are awesome.
They are manmade and have a synthetic sole. Crocs are always made of decent material, so this shouldn't surprise me. The shape of the clog is also precisely what you'd expect from a nursing clog. The shaft is almost a whole inch away from the arch. This gives them a lot of flexibility. And this, in turn, gives you a whole lot of comfort. All-day long. Week in, week out. For the entire lifespan of the clog.
They have a very wide metatarsal area. This helps to protect your foot from any spills that might occur. Nobody likes a dirty clog, of course. But should they get dirty anyway, they rest assured that they are simple to clean, using regular soap and water. So all I have left to say is that Crocs' Bistro clog is a super decent clog for a reasonable price.
Are Nursing Shoes For Women Different From Men's?
While most people in the nursing world are female, there are also lots of men who are nurses and enjoy the job. With that being said, as the majority are women in the field, the best shoes for nurses are aimed at women. Women's and men's nursing shoes are alike in some ways, but there is some major difference too. Before buying any shoes, be sure to remember this fact if you are a man, as buying shoes designed for a woman will simply just cause pain to your feet.
Shoes made for women are different as they are usually narrower and smaller. Meanwhile, men's nursing clogs will be wider and larger. Women's nursing clogs will usually have extra details around the edges. For example, there may be some flowers or patterns on nursing shoes for women. Men's shoes will just be basic, without any extra decoration, and they come in black, brown and white.
It should be known that there are major differences between men's and women's feet. It is clear that men have broader and longer feet than women, but there are other differences. One thing to note is how the ball of the foot, arch, and big toes are very different in men and women. You see, women usually have higher arches than men.
The Q-Angle is something else that is different in the sexes. The Q-Angle is the angle of the kneecap when measured up to the quad muscle. As men possess narrower hips, they have narrow Q-angles as well. Due to this, the way women stand is different, and they need to have more support in their shoes to deal with this factor. Men can wear shoes with thinner, less-supportive soles, and some of the best shoes for men are those with a flat sole, based on the nature of the male foot. The best shoes for women will be those that offer much more support around the base of the foot.
Where To Buy Nursing Shoes
There are many places to find nurses' shoes. Of course, you need to know your size and foot shape before going shopping. You also need to know which style you like and the design that would be best for your feet. There are now some department stores that stock medical types of footwear, but you may have to look online. If you are shopping in person, you need to find a place that has a lot to choose from. This will help to ensure that you get what you need by trying on many different styles and types first. You can also use Amazon, as there are dozens to choose from. A great review system will help you find people like you and get their experiences before buying. It is best to know what other nurses have thought about the shoes before buying them. As you will be wearing them for a long time, it is good to know what other nurses decide about them.
Nursing Shoes FAQ
Q:How do I find my size?
A: When trying the shoes on, choose your normal size first, then try on another pair in close sizes. Walk around for a little bit to get a feel for them. Be aware of any pain or rubbing. Also, some shoes are sized by European standards, so you might need to convert them to US sizes.
Q:Can custom orthotics be used with hospital shoes?
A: There are some cases where this is the case, but most manufacturers suggest first trying your orthotics on with the shoes and then checking for a good fit before making a final choice.
Q:Which shoes are slip resistant?
A: You should be able to see from looking at the shoe. Many have labels placed on them, which will make it very clear. Also, check for SATRA and ASTM stickers, as these are the standards for best quality.
Q:What upper material options are open to me with these shoes?
A: The top nursing shoes will be made in either: leather, patent leather, suede, synthetic leather, rubber, polyurethane or polypropylene.
Q:How do I take good care of my hospital clogs?
A: A few steps will ensure you get the most from your nursing shoes. The first thing to avoid is never putting them into a washing machine or dryer. If the soles are made of rubber, washing them with a damp cloth every second week is the best idea.

Hi Brian, thank you for your very comprehensive article. My granddaughter will start her clinical trial soon and will be looking for nursing shoes. She has knock knees. Does she need special orthopedic nursing shoes to,preven future problems with spine and knees? Thank you.
Hi Cecilia,
Your granddaughter is going to need shoes with moderate to high stability. It helps to have a rigid insole in there. I like to wear Tread Labs, myself.
These are very rigid, since they are essently a hard bit of plastic. The upside to this, is that they truly never wear out.
Hope this helps. Best of luck to you and your granddaughter.
Sincerely,
Brian
